Affordable hot places to visit in the autumn

Portugal

After a glorious heatwave this summer in the UK, it’s now getting cooler and the drastic temperature drops in the evenings are a clear indicator of a cold autumn approaching. Whilst summer comes to an end, if you crave heat like me, you’re probably already plotting your holiday escapes to get some warmth during the colder months of the year.

The autumn is a great time to book a holiday as the end of the peak summer season offers the best prices for flights and holiday packages. So if you’re looking for sun, sea and sand this coming season and you don’t want to spend a fortune travelling across the world, here are 6 affordable places you could visit:

Portugal – The Algarve

The Algarve is the beautiful coastline of southern Portugal and is famous for its golden beaches, sandy coves and great seafood. It is also relatively cheap compared to other European beach locations with cocktails sometimes sold as low as 4 euros. On average in October, daytime temperatures are around 23-25°C dropping to a modest 20°C in November, and the sea remains warm enough for avid swimmers.

The Canary Islands, Spain

A popular destination for many Brits, the seven islands of the canaries are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. The weather is blissfully warm and dry across all islands during the autumn with temperatures at 26°C in October and 22°C in November. Even December offers a relatively warm 20°C, a wonderful break from usually a cold and wet month. Less popular islands such as El Hierro also offer a quiet and tranquil setting for a relaxing break.

Morocco

In the north of Africa, Morocco has a gorgeous coastline which borders both the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. With guaranteed heat at 28°C in October, it is one of the cheaper places to visit outside of Europe in the autumn with flight prices ranging from £60 - £200 in October and November.

The French Riviera

The south of France is often viewed as very expensive as most people associate it with glamourous scenes of the rich and famous lounging on white yachts in Monaco and St Tropez. However the French Riviera is extensive and includes more affordable, yet just as beautiful, locations such as Nice and Marseille. With a warm average day temperature of 21°C in October and long days of sunlight, it can be the perfect location for an escape from the cold weather. Flights to Nice particularly in the autumn can be as cheap as £40 for a return ticket and cheap air bnbs are in abundance.

The Greek Cyclades

The Cyclades are a group of Greek islands, southeast of the mainland in the Aegean Sea. They include popular destinations such as Mykonos and Santorini and they are renowned for their stunning beaches, rocky cliffs and breath-taking views. Average temperatures in the autumn lie between 18°C and 24°C and they are full of history hosting many ancient ruins and artefacts.

Cyprus

If like me you enjoy hotter than average weather, Cyprus could be the next perfect destination for you this autumn. Temperatures can reach as high as 29°C in October and the sea temperature is still warm (approx. 24°C) for those who enjoy swimming and water sports. Flights to Cyprus from the UK can cost as low as £65 in November depending on the day of the week and hotels/bnbs tend to cost a fraction of the average price in the quieter season.

So what are you waiting for?! If you need some warmth this autumn, book a trip to one of these destinations and soak up the rays of the sun!
